I found a great article about the relation between support, control, and the social patterns of depression. Most people ask for help for depression, thinking they can do it all by themselves. However, support from others is necessary to stop feeling depressed. This is what the research found out:
“Research on the social patterns of depression in the community finds consistently that high levels of education and income, being male, and being married are associated with lower levels of depression. We attempt to explain these patterns as the result of two essential social perceptions: the sense of controlling one’s own life rather than being at the mercy of powerful others and outside forces, and the sense of having a supportive and understanding person to talk to in times of trouble.
In theory, the sense of control reduces depression because it encourages active problem solving, and the sense of support reduces depression because it provides others to talk to. We find evidence for the first proposition: persons who feel in control of their lives are more likely to attempt to solve problems.
Perceived control and problem solving decrease depression and largely explain the effects of income and education on depression. We find, however, that support has mixed effects.
Support decreases depression, but talking to others when faced with a problem, which increases with the level of support, increases depression.

Basically, there are three types of self help for depression treatments:
This self help for depression treatment means, that to overcome depression, it is important to have the support of another person. The sense of loneliness increase the chance to stay depressed. It is okay to ask help for depression, but it is necessary to ask to the right person. The most important persons in your life are your family, your friends, and your mentors. You should ask for help in that order.
First, try to talk to your family about how you feel and that you need their support. Of course you’ll worry them at first, but it is necessary to let them know how you really feel on the inside. Once that awkward moment passes, you’ll feel you drop our rock from your back, and you have people that are carrying you.

Over the past year, 16.5 million Americans age 18 or older — 1 in 13 adults — experienced at least one bout of major depression, according to a new government survey in 2009. Whatever the reason, forgoing care is never a good idea, one expert said. “Depression is a medical condition that should be treated with the same urgency as any other medical condition”.
With this article, you’ll be able to establish your level of depression, so you decide if you want to treat it with a depression self help treatment or you need to go to your clinical doctor.
Symptoms of Depression
Not everyone who is depressed or manic experiences every symptom. The severity of symptoms varies among individuals and also over time. Here are the most common symptoms of depression:
Types of Depression

In a previous article about natural remedies with deppression, I talked about how to heal your current state, but alternative methods such as self-help motivation, exercise, yoga, herbal medications, etc. In this article you’ll find out some of the foods you can eat, during a period of time, that will act as natural cures for depression.
For example, studies have shown that the more fish a country eats the lower is their incidence of depression. There’s a type of omega 3 fat called EPA which seems to be the most potent natural anti-depressant. In a study conduct the one Harvard Medical School, there have been six double-blind placebo controlled trials to date, five of which show significant improvement. The first trial by Dr Andrew Stoll, published in the Archives of General Psychiatry, gave 40 depressed patients either omega 3 supplements versus placebo and found a highly significant improvement.
Beside fish, here is a list a food that will act as natural cures for depression:
1) Oatmeal
Oatmeal may help if you find yourself feeling irritable and cranky. It is rich in soluble fiber, which helps to smooth out blood sugar levels by slowing the absorption of sugar into the blood.
Oatmeal is also a great food to help you stick with your diet plan, because the soluble fiber in oatmeal forms a gel that slows the emptying of your stomach so you don’t feel hungry quickly.

It is amazing how many people use alternative medicine to heal themselves. Almost one of every three Americans use complementary or alternative medicines each year. Some of the natural remedies for depression you can use are:
- relaxation techniques
- self-help groups
- self-help hypnosis
- massage
- exercise
- yoga
- aromatherapy
- home remedies
- spiritual healing
- laughter
- herbal medication
Here are some of the natural remedies for depression most effective to help you right now:
1) St. John’s Wort
The herb St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) has long been used in folk medicine for sadness, worry, nervousness, and poor sleep. It is considered one of the best natural remedies for depression.
Today, the results of over 20 clinical trials suggest that St. John’s wort works better than a placebo and is as effective as antidepressants for mild to moderate depression, with fewer side effects.
Studies suggest that St. John’s wort is not effective for major depression.
It’s available at health food stores, drug stores, and online in the form of capsules, tablets, liquid extracts, or tea.
2) Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of good fat needed for normal brain function. Our bodies can’t make omega-3s on their own, so we must obtain them through our diet.
Can you make it on your own? Is self help for depression possible, without asking for help? Read this story to find out…I found a story about a young boy who committed suicide because all the bulling he was dealing with in his school. His name was Jared Benjamin High, you can read the whole story here. The point is, Jared wasn’t able to find out how to overcome his depression. He didn’t ask for help. Maybe, he just didn’t know he could.
I want you to know this: it is ok to ask for help. You can do it on your own, but you need someone to show you how. Looking for self help for depression is not a lonely road. Here are some of the lessons I learn by myself, I want to share with you, so you don’t get to become another Jared.
Very common, we ask for help for depression on the wrong place. For example, asking a “buddy” for advice, when he or she actually doesn’t care. You need to think about the people who really love you, cares for you. There is always someone to count on, but be sure to pick the right person. And when you ask for help, tell the truth. Don’t try to hide the facts or your true feelings, get them out, let the other person know how you feel. Share your feelings, even when they are negative.

I was reading one of the chicken soup for the soul stories, about overcoming depression. There is a story about depression and suicide, in which a mother starts researching why her daughter Arlyn killed herself. She then understood that it was an escape from emotional pain. She explained it like this: “it was as though her heart was carrying a heavy weight, and it became unbearable”. By suiciding, she was looking for help for depression.
I don´t remember where I hear this, but I think it is a very profound phrase, we can use to understand why is depression caused and how to overcome depression. “Things happen”. You may be saying, “Ok, where is this going?” Things happen in life all the time. Sometimes, what we call good things, and sometimes bad things. However, as humans we have the tendency to overreact to bad things, and to forget about the good ones. For example, when was the last time you realized you are lucky to be healthy? Think about all the people dying in a hospital because of a terrible disease like cancer or aids, and thinking “I would give anything to be ok again”. Or even how lucky we are to have food in our table. If you are using Internet, most probable you have at least one meal a day.
