“Research on the social patterns of depression in the community finds consistently that high levels of education and income, being male, and being married are associated with lower levels of depression. We attempt to explain these patterns as the result of two essential social perceptions: the sense of controlling one’s own life rather than being at the mercy of powerful others and outside forces, and the sense of having a supportive and understanding person to talk to in times of trouble.
In theory, the sense of control reduces depression because it encourages active problem solving, and the sense of support reduces depression because it provides others to talk to. We find evidence for the first proposition: persons who feel in control of their lives are more likely to attempt to solve problems.
Perceived control and problem solving decrease depression and largely explain the effects of income and education on depression. We find, however, that support has mixed effects.
Support decreases depression, but talking to others when faced with a problem, which increases with the level of support, increases depression.

This self help for depression treatment means, that to overcome depression, it is important to have the support of another person. The sense of loneliness increase the chance to stay depressed. It is okay to ask help for depression, but it is necessary to ask to the right person. The most important persons in your life are your family, your friends, and your mentors. You should ask for help in that order.
First, try to talk to your family about how you feel and that you need their support. Of course you’ll worry them at first, but it is necessary to let them know how you really feel on the inside. Once that awkward moment passes, you’ll feel you drop our rock from your back, and you have people that are carrying you.

To understand self-esteem, it helps to break the term into two words. Let’s take a look at the word esteem (say: ess-teem) first. Esteem is a fancy word for thinking that someone or something is important or valuing that person or thing. For example, if you really admire someone, it means you hold him in high esteem. And self means, well, yourself! So put the two words together and it’s easier to see what self-esteem is. It’s how much you value yourself and how important you think you are. It’s how you see yourself and how you feel about your achievements.

I was reading one of the chicken soup for the soul stories, about overcoming depression. There is a story about depression and suicide, in which a mother starts researching why her daughter Arlyn killed herself. She then understood that it was an escape from emotional pain. She explained it like this: “it was as though her heart was carrying a heavy weight, and it became unbearable”. By suiciding, she was looking for help for depression.
I don´t remember where I hear this, but I think it is a very profound phrase, we can use to understand why is depression caused and how to overcome depression. “Things happen”. You may be saying, “Ok, where is this going?” Things happen in life all the time. Sometimes, what we call good things, and sometimes bad things. However, as humans we have the tendency to overreact to bad things, and to forget about the good ones. For example, when was the last time you realized you are lucky to be healthy? Think about all the people dying in a hospital because of a terrible disease like cancer or aids, and thinking “I would give anything to be ok again”. Or even how lucky we are to have food in our table. If you are using Internet, most probable you have at least one meal a day.
